Hi,
I am a PMP, I thinking of going for PgMP cetrification. But in then Project management industry, I couldn't find any major response for PgMP. Even the training centers also very less. The people who attending PgMP exam is very few.

It makes me to think twice before applying for PgMP.

On December 31, '08, PMI will release four new standards - The PMBOK© Fourth Edition, The OPM3© Second Edition, The Standard for Program Management Second Edition and the Standard for Portfolio Management Second Edition. The main goal in releasing four the standards simultaneously was to ensure they were in harmony with the other. While the new standards are being released this month, they will not become the basis of certification testing until mid '09.

Specifically, the PMBOK© Fourth Edition will become the basis for the PMP© exam on July 1, 09, the CAPM© exam on August 1, 09 and the PMI-SP(sm) and PMI-RMP(sm) exams on September 1, 09. The Standard for Program Management Second Edition along with the PMBOK© Fourth Edition will become the basis for the PgMP(sm) exam on September 1, 09.

However, since every candidate is encouraged to read the associated standard for the certification they seek, every candidate testing after the cut-over date should order the new standard(s) as soon as possible. To order directly from the PMI, visit their marketplace at http://www.pmi.org/Marketplace/Pages/default.aspx

Terminus began preparing its PgMP course material in June '08. Since that time, we have reviewed a plethora of books and study guides targeted for the PgMP credential. Without a doubt, the most realistic sample questions have been delivered to the market by J. LeRoy Ward and Ginger Levin. Their PgMP(sm) Exam Practice Test & Study Guide has become recommended reading by Terminus PgMP Coaches since its discovery in October '08. As reported back to us by our PgMP candidates (all whom have passed the exam-by the way), The Ward/Levin study guide provided the closest samples to the actual PMI exam. While it is recommended to get as many sample questions as possible when preparing for the PgMP exam, every candidate should also consider a PgMP preparation course. A targeted preparation course greatly improves you chances of passing the exam. If you are interested in attending a course offered by Terminus, please visit http://training.terminus.net/course-schedule-pgmp.php

A company that I know is growing rapidly. As a result, they started a lot of IT initiatives and then decided they needed a PMO to help manage them once they got out of control. In order to ensure that the business has the proper ownership and buy-in of each initiative, the new PMO is recommending that project managers not be assigned to the project until after user requirements (blueprint) is completed. They believe that this approach will create a business-friendly relationship with IT which is somewhat adversarial at the moment.

I told them that hiring project managers after requirements were documented would greatly reduce the already poor success rate that they are experiencing and thus worsen the relationship with their business counterparts. What other advice would you share with this company?

Passing the PMP exam is a matter of memorizing the PMBOK. Read and re-read the PMBOK. Make up or buy flash cards. Buy practice tests which can be used to evaluate if you are ready for the exam or not. If you are really nervous and have test worries, then take a formal PMP exam prep class which will provide help on overcoming this.

For the PgMP exam, you MUST have relevent experience. Without experience, I doubt you will be able to pass the exam becasue it is scenario based. You must read the Program Management Standard at least 3-7 times. Pay attention to order of activities in the different processes. Know the inputs and outputs cold. Review the terms. This exam is the hardest of all PMI exams, but if you have good program management experience you will have an advantage.

For PMP exam prep, my company uses both IIL and Cheetah Learning. Cheetah has been doing this for years and has a very repeatable process which works well for us. We have only had one person fail the exam on the first pass and pass on the second attempt. IIL takes a different approach and is not as successful.

However, I must say that if your goal includes really learning the topics of the exam rather than just getting a brainwashing of exam topics, then I would suggest a much different path which would take several months and years of experience.

For the PgMP exam, stay with the smaller companies. Terminus, Crosswinds and others do a much better job than the larger training companies due to small class sizes (usually no more than 6 people). Also, make sure that the instructor is someone who as actually taken and passed the PgMP exam.
